Every journey has its catalyst.
Mine was Maggie Martella, a marriage and family therapist who saw the boundless potential in social work long before I did. "It will give you the most flexibility and maximum options," she told me, planting seeds that would later bloom into the work I do today.
As we approach Social Work Month 2025, I'm reflecting on how our profession has evolved since its recognition began in 1963. We've grown from advocates and healers to entrepreneurs, educators, and innovators—each of us weaving our unique thread into the fabric of social change.
Speaking of evolution, my own journey has taken me to unexpected places, including virtually keynoting a social work conference in the Netherlands.
Picture this: me, attempting to welcome Dutch social workers in their native language. While I probably didn't nail the pronunciation (let's be honest!), that moment perfectly captures what our profession is about: stepping out of our comfort zones to connect and create impact, even if it means stumbling through a few Dutch phrases!

Why This Matters
In our field, we often focus so intently on lifting others that we forget to celebrate our own victories. As someone who's spent two decades helping mental health professionals step into their entrepreneurial power through Perfected Practice, I've witnessed firsthand how recognition can transform not just careers but an entire business.
These awards aren't just about celebration; they're about visibility and possibility. When we showcase social workers who've built thriving businesses, created unique brands, or pioneered creative approaches to practice, we demonstrate what's achievable. Every day, I work with practitioners who are redefining what it means to be a social worker in business, and it's time these innovations got the spotlight they deserve.
Think about it:
Who opened doors for you?
Just as Maggie showed me the possibilities of private practice years ago, who's blazing trails and showing others the way today? Who's quietly revolutionizing the way we serve our communities while building sustainable, impactful businesses?
This is your chance to say, "I see you. Your work matters." It's an opportunity to recognize those who've mastered the delicate balance of heart-centered service and smart business practices—something I'm passionate about nurturing in our profession.
Remember: Our field grows stronger when we lift each other up. Who will you celebrate?
