8/10 One is Too Small a Number to do Anything Great

10 Tips From 10 Years in Business

#8 One is too small a number to create anything great. OK…this one is big, because it is about one of the most important elements in your business.

PEOPLE. People will make or break your business.

At the end of the day, no matter what your industry is…you are in the people business.

People will be your staff, people will be your customers/clients and people will be the network that nurtures your business. You absolutely need other people…and people are as unique as the day is long.

Developing good people skills is key to your business success for so many reasons:

1. You cannot do it all. It is impossible to build your business without making space for the wisdom and expertise of colleagues, staff, mentors etc. You will need to be able to delegate and trust others.

Become adept at knowing the kinds of people that you work best with. Know your strengths and what supports you will need to produce great results. Choose wisely, communicate clearly and develop honest relationships where you can trust others.

2. Your customers are people. You have to have some clarity about who they are, what they need and what they are looking for from you. Once you are clear on who they are, you have to be able to convey confidence that you can help them get the results they need. People do business with folks they are comfortable with.

Are you someone that your customers can connect with and trust?

This begins with operating in integrity. If you know the story of how this business began, you can imagine that I am BIG on integrity, ethics and excellence. Strive for excellence in business. Under promising but consistently over delivering. Develop a reputation for excellence by being above board and reliable in all your dealings. It will set you apart, no matter what your business is. Be willing to go the extra mile…it’s never crowded.
